iheart variation 003_010, variation by Douglas Rushkoff and Shaun Friesen:
From Douglas:
We chose to return to the source of modern cut-up: the Beats and other 60’s psychedelic creators who sought to reclaim the power of language, art, chemicals, and sex from the elites who had monopolized them for centuries. Whether it was Burroughs cutting up text, Leary promoting neurochemistry, Ginsberg teaching love, or Warhol artifying industry, these are the fathers of mash.

I went on to revariate Ditte’s variations, bringing her works back into direct play with the originals. These works first occurred digitally; a few were then printed for the show at the Roger Smith Hotel.

iheart variation 003_008, by Chris and Dominic Leong
From Dominic and Chris:
I Heart^3 is the continuation in a series of projects that explore the translation of a legible figure into a continuous field. In this case, we used three of the I Heart prints, which are themselves icon figures, and transformed them through a series operations. The prints were replicated, broken into smaller pixels, and reorganized into 6 different ‘fields’ of pattern. By using these patterns to create a cube the original prints are transformed into a 3-Dimensional ‘field object’ that can be subject to continuous variation and manipulation.

This project appropriates (sic)’s symbols to create a narrative that acts as a symbol act in itself.

It’s the realization and knowledge of the consequences that makes it possible to enjoy the things from which these consequences are born.

I have been thinking a lot of how people get connected with the others in internet social net-working sites. So I used Seth’s symbol as icons for some kind of games or puzzles for social net-workings.

iheart variation 003_005, variation by Ditte Gantriis
Ditte lives in Copenhagen, so this variation was organized over email. Here is the dialogue that led to these works:
Ditte: I just realized i think i misunderstood the project!!!
What I did was to draw/make my own interpretation based on your splat print. So i have made 6 splat-inspired silkscreen prints.Seth: the “mistake” can be part of the process. It’s all interesting. a collaboration confused by email and geographic separation…it starts as splat and your variations are more like drips that eventually splat.

‘FarRockSessions’ (2010) ink, watercolor pencil, SIC prints and markers
Its an abstract piece based on the past few surf sessions in far rockaway. This one particular session had me out at 6 am on a cloudy rainy day with a school of dolphins swimming about in the not too far off distance. I remember my first initial shock of seeing dorsal fins break the water but the shape was actually round and surf fin like. I just remember the shape and their round body and felt pretty good to be in the water when they were in the water. I also had another session, this time in the afternoon, and the water was this turquois and bright green with hazy orange sunsetting and intense orange and yellows and pinks! That was a more recent session.. last week ish.. around danielle right before earl. something like that. the cameras and all those modern things to help us check out the weather and beaches as well as our chills and ills and even spills. but waves and sunsets and wildlives.. well, that s always can t be recreated cause it s too abstract and un-controlled, moments like that, it requires the participant to just be aware and this whole thing unfolds itself in pure chaos.
Mike is also a member of the Barnstormers, a traveling group of muralists, see the links below for their work.

iheart variation 003_001, variation by Molly Dilworth
I’m interested in the way icons communicate the essence of a thing through abstraction. I like the way icons change and mutate, like language, to keep themselves employed. It’s also my favorite thing about Seth’s project, that he’s encouraging and recording those mutations - a language isn’t alive if it’s not used.
I chose the ‘splat’ print which represents paint for me. I wanted to combine the symbol and the real thing so I made a poured painting on top of the print. They’re somehow together and separate at the same time.
