Created by Seth Indigo Carnes, iheart variation 003 is part of the variation series within the iheart project. As iheart explores powerful symbolic language resonating in human society, the iheart variation series takes this language into a field of variable experience, celebrating the grand collage that is life and meaning in flux.
This concept of living symbols changing over time, context and hands beyond my own is activated by several radical ideas of 20th century art: play, chance and an idea of art as a powerful means to transform human life through creative activity.
This iheart variation 003 series started as a print series with ArtWeLove, where they selected 5 symbol paintings from the original set of 9 to create a limited print edition. The selected symbols: iheart, heart, splat, pill, and camera.
The original print edition measured 8”x8”. With a print edition came an opportunity to move from production of one painted symbol to multiples in archival ink. An opportunity soon arose to show the project at the Roger Smith Hotel in NYC, at which point the prints took on a new life.
With the support of ArtWeLove, I invited artists to develop interpretative variations using whatever prints inspired them. These works became the basis of the art show at the Roger Smith, along with a largescale velcro wall installation on which the original framed prints were placed.
The artworks created for that show are on display within this site, and the film is also viewable on the site.
Thanks to all who participated in this project.
